HowMuch app for Android

Last updated: 7 September 2026 — version 1.6.0

In short

HowMuch is an app for recording family expenses and splitting them among the people who use it. This page explains, simply and without pointing to a text written for lawyers, what data the app handles, why, and how it is deleted.

01Signing in

You sign in with a Google account. HowMuch receives from Google the name, email address and profile photo of the chosen account: they are used to show who recorded an expense and whose balance it is. No other Google permission is requested — not your contacts, not your files, not your location.

02What is recorded when using the app

What you enter into it, and nothing else:

  • the expenses entered — amount, description, category, who paid, how it is split;
  • the settlement transfers recorded between family members;
  • the custom categories and monthly budgets created;
  • the "managed family members" — name and photo of a person without their own login, added by an administrator so expenses can be assigned to them.

This data is shared among the members of the same family: that is how the app works, not an exception. It is not visible to any other family, and it is not used for any purpose other than showing expenses and balances to those who belong to it.

03Notifications

To let you know when someone records an expense or when a transfer needs settling, the app stores a device notification token — a technical identifier used only to deliver that notification, generated by the Google/Expo push service. On its own it does not identify a person.

04Diagnostics: when something goes wrong

App errors are sent to Sentry, a monitoring service, so they can be fixed before anyone has to report them. Each report carries:

  • the device model, and the Android and app versions;
  • the point in the code where the error occurred;
  • an anonymous account identifier (a string of letters and numbers) — never the name or the email address.

No browsing activity is recorded, and there is no advertising or advertising tracking of any kind in this app.

05Where this data lives

Expenses, balances and profiles are stored on Supabase, the service that provides the app's database. Error reports go through Sentry, on its European infrastructure. Sign-in goes through Google. None of this data is sold, or handed to third parties for marketing or advertising.

06Deleting your account

From Settings › Account › Delete account, inside the app, at any time, without having to write to anyone. What happens:

  • the name, email address, photo and notification token are permanently removed;
  • signing in with that account stops working;
  • expenses and transfers already recorded stay in the family history, attributed to "Removed member" — because they are also the accounts of those who remain: deleting them would change balances already settled between the other people in the family.

Anyone who wants to leave the family without deleting their account can do so from Settings › Family › Leave family: expenses already recorded stay with the others, and you can create or join another one.

07Children

HowMuch is not meant to be used independently by children. A "managed family member" can also represent a child, but is always managed by an adult in the family: the child has no login of their own and does not enter any data.

08Changes to this policy

If anything changes in what the app records, this page is updated and the date at the top changes accordingly.
